Many videogames suffer "review bombing" -a large volume of unusually low scores that in many cases do not reflect the real quality of the product- when rated by users. By taking Metacritic's 50,000+ user score aggregations for PC games in English language, we use a Natural Language Processing (NLP) approach to try to understand the main words and concepts appearing in such cases, reaching a 0.88 accuracy on a validation set when distinguishing between just bad ratings and review bombings. By uncovering and analyzing the patterns driving this phenomenon, these results could be used to further mitigate these situations.

Review bombing is a practice in which many people (or a few aggrieved folks with multiple accounts) barrage a product, business or service with negative reviews, usually in bad faith. That can severely damage a small or local business that relies on word of mouth. Google says millions of reviews are posted on Maps every day, and it has laid out some of the measures it employs to stamp out review bombing. "Our team is dedicated to keeping the user-created content on Maps reliable and based on real-world experience," the Google Maps team said in a video. That work helps to protect businesses from abuse and fraud and ensures reviews are beneficial for users.

Trolls have been trying to sabotage Captain Marvel's success since the first trailer dropped last September. So persistent and numerous were these trolls in their "review bombing" that Rotten Tomatoes changed its policies to prevent people from rating a movie before its release, and YouTube altered its search algorithm to uncouple star Brie Larson's name from the smears. Captain Marvel's box office performance has led many to say that the movie "defeated" or "conquered" the trolls--and the trolls certainly did lose.

Rotten Tomatoes is overhauling its Audience Rating System in an effort to stamp out so-called "review bombing." As part of the ongoing changes, the review aggregation site is axing the "want to see" audience anticipation rating ahead of a film's release. The update arrives in the wake of the latest "review bombing" campaign against Captain Marvel, the first female-led Marvel Studios movie, which saw trolls weaponize the user rating system to drive down its "want to see" score to a paltry 28 percent. This despite all box office tracking estimates indicating the film was set for a blockbuster opening. According to Rotten Tomatoes, visitors were confusing the "want to see" rating with its "Audience Score."
